Poems

It was during my senior year of high school, transitioning to study at a community college, that I wrote my very first poem, "Aslan: Life Before Death", while sitting in math class (yes, I know... but it was during algebra. lol)

From that point on, writing poetry has become a way for me to pour out on paper what I see in nature, God, relationships, what I read in books, and what I feel in general. Scraps of lined paper, wrinkled index cards, textbooks, Facebook notes, and "somewhat-illustrated" notebooks all hold my collective poems from these past several years (2009-2012), a few of which I've decided to share here on this page for you. =)

Sooo. Here are a few of my poems, both little and much longer. I hope you enjoy them! :)

{ Spearmint Wind }

(Childhood delight over the wonderful morph of spring into summer)
May 6, 2012

 "We open the lid
And Wonder spills out;
A Spearmint wind
(Mixed with a chortled shout!)
Breaks free of it's box,
Knocking us off our feet.
We fall to the ground, you and I
Giggling, there we lie,
Upon radiant earth
Grass, spearmint green,
Where grasshoppers fly.
We blow green bubbles
To paint the clouds emerald, if they rise;
But instead we end up, gingerly,
Picking gum off our eyes.
Oh! Oh beautiful seconds, how you fly!!
As we run through sunny fields
Ripened beneath Summer sky!
You're a balm on our pale shoulders,
A ripe song jolting our weary veins.

Oh! Spearmint wind, keep racing,
Rejoice in your elixir so sweet!"

{ Dawn }

(After a sleepless night with a lot on my mind. =) It was worth it)
 July 11, 2010

"Hope takes form,
Life cries re-born...
Growing on the sky.
No laughter drifts,
Over misty boughs...
The stars all run and hide.

Inhales the earth,
A bright, damp breath,
Courage for the day;
I know Love lives
My faith can soar...
As God lifts Dawn
from where she lay."

{ The Breath of Spring }

(First signs of Spring)
 March 19, 2010

"Sweetly drift
oh sweetly die...
Let through my hair
this murmuring breeze fly.

A song,
a prayer,
Drifted embrace;
Warmth reviving
as tremulous Hope,
Touches my frost-worn face.

One silent chime of laughter,
silent yet a shout;
A proclamation of new birth,
long-forgotten strength unfurls
For overhead The Breath uncurls,
giving Life because of Love.

Pungent Breath
oh breathe joyfully!
No shadow do You make;
bidding all Creation rise,
Caressing deeper blue the skies
unseen to my contented eyes...
Life's giver I hear speak.

"Birds, sing!
Show blind hearts Who made you!
Trees, sway and dance!
Child, know I Love you...
as I breathe into you again."

Sweetly drift
Oh so sweetly die...
the Spring breeze,
Comes floating by;
All Creation before me revives
as God tousles my hair one more time,
Breathing, swelling, a sigh in my mind...

while the Breath of Spring
sweetly dies."

{ A Wave }

 (A day by the sea)
 April 25, 2011

"Briny walls crash,
With joy they thrash,
Thrash the seabed loam;

Surging!
Thundering!
On mighty legs racing,

Climbing!
Reaching!
Tossing back merman hair,

Flexing!
Roaring!
With a gleeful shout, chortling!

Plummeting...
Rolling...
Enfolding to it's knees;

And guttering...
Life spilling...
Foamy babe now sleeping;
Poured out cold across the sand."

Section II. Spiritual Life

{ Web of Love }

(A soul meets eternity)

May 4, 2009

"Wind currents flow,
aloft I spiraling tread.
This dust-hewn cloak blown away,
a Spark upward flies.

Though I leave life's mysteries behind,
never to unravel again...
I pray that my Love's tangled thread,
is well wrapped 'round my mourners heads,
Tied gently to my web of Love
I remember them even from Heaven above.

Till all has been said,
and the Book 'tis closed.
The earth destroyed,
yet Bliss reposed;
All God's children sit united 'round the Throne...

With you, Dearheart,
Love's tangled web I leave."

{ Somehow }

(Renewed purpose // trusting in the Lord)
  February 4, 2010

"Reaching apathy
veils my eyes.
Here I sit
searching my mind;
Find an explanation for my pride...
Somehow.

How can God
Creator,
Omnipresent One...
Use me on this dying Earth,
where I truly don't belong?
What good have I to give,
But nothing left at all...
Somehow.

Living with a smile
And trudging without song;
Tears roll down
my solemn face,
No prince in sight
to comfort me.
Old regrets brought me here...
Somehow.

I'm now empty of use
gave You only thought;
Spoke to others of Your grace,
Yet lost the Joy of Your face...
Somehow.

But through my trespasses
black on a blood cleansed soul,
You press Your hand upon my chest
silently letting me know...

You want me here,
Just for now
Till the mystery's complete.
Your divine purpose unveiling...
Beauty still unraveling...
Life is just beginning...
Somehow."

{ Wish }

August 5, 2010
"If I could gather tendriled mist
Drink in its sweetness deep,
Lie down in silence unblemished
Hear God lull the sky to sleep.
If I could chase the darkness
From beneath the shadowed glades;
Catch special moments in a jar,
Never let them fade away.

I would still wish for a heart to hold
A dwelling to call my own;
For love to grow stronger with distance
And no solder to die alone.

If I could harness
all grief and pain,
Give everyone a safe place to sleep...
Forgive every enemy I've ever known
Have the grace to wash their feet;
If I could withstand my nightmares
Face alone the gathering dark,
I still would lay before Jesus...

And wish there to leave my Heart."

{ Water }

(Revived by God's amazing Grace)
 May 4, 2009

"A single trickle.
I see it shiver down the wall,
of my lonely confinement.
Dripping on my closed, blind eyes
it's healing so deliberate.
Dare I break my pride and drink
this water which burns as embers?
Can I surrender old pleasures I hide
to this soul renewing spring?

Chains grip me to the wall
of my sinful confinement.
Certain of catching my soul gone astray,
Satan my bonds still tighten.
In my dead, weakened stupor,
I've thrown the Key away;
vainly confident of my own small strength
God's Truth in my heart I sway.

Drip, drip, drip.
What is this cleansing that I feel,
through these man-made ashes?
I hear in the distance
a Voice I had longed for,
even in my desolate confinement.
Commanding my attention from this life,
the Voice like thunder shakes me.
Dare I break my heart open
deny the wiles of Satan,
Take hold of Jesus' feet again
my Chains, will He undo them?

Streams of water now pour down my face,
I open my mouth to receive it.
A river drenches my sin-stained jail,
drowning my tortures-
breaking this spell.
Soaked with His Grace
my Chains are no more,
I am forever alive in Christ
Saved from Hell's gaping door.
Sunlight warms my face,
drying all my tears.

Fading away my confinement dies,
a death I will always remember.
Jesus, may I never see the day
where I shun Your water from Heaven.
Embrace me always on Your Heart,

in Your wings I am safe
strong,
sealed,
forgiven.

Whenever in sin's confinement I lie

deceived by the wiles of Satan,
You remind I am free

by Your Son, I am free!
 You rain Grace on this child,
reviving,
transforming,
loving....

Starting with only one drop."

{ Leaving Home }

(Leaving for college)
August 4, 2010
"I have found a Place
A place of my own...
Here I am free
Untangled,
At home.

I have loved this place,
Sheltered from the Storm;
Blue, tranquil, apart from hate...
My temporary Home.

Now I am leaving,
To shoulder my burdens;
Find my way on Earth...
God be my stronghold
Let praise come to You,
As You send me forth
From this harbor in Time...

This tender Place
I called my Home."

Section III. Birth & Pro-life

{ Unborn }

(In remembrance of my stillborn sibling, grieving over abortion, and in defense of unborn life.
 "A person's a person, no matter how small." ~ Dr. Seuss)

July 23, 2010

"When does Life begin...
When It's visible to the eye?
When Life's lashes finally flutter
And they hear It cry?

Silent one
Child unloved,
You burst your world at the seams;
Never knowing outside these walls
Heaven you first might see.

When did they grow hard...
Sell their bodies to a knife?
Forgetting the eyes upon their forms
Hands stirring their blood to Life?

Defenseless one
Child unchosen,
You never asked to become a Soul;
Yet here you are sleeping soundly
Preparing for the arms of God.

Will they never understand...
That all is seen from Heaven?
Silently you're beating upon these walls
Innocent in living?

For our stillborn one
Child unknown
Waiting now at the Gate for me;
Though we had to let you go
I hope you know...
We loved you
Precious unborn."

{ Born Alive }

(My birth & future eternal hope in God. Inspired by Psalm 139:13-14)

May 11, 2012

"No light in this room,
a room oh so small...
silent, natural, yes, unafraid.
Here, You created my eyes,
here I laid in Your hands
not so long ago;
Cradled, oh so close,
close to Your heart,
Your Love my swaddling clothes.

Never alone was I, in my room,
for there we were closest of all...
I did not hide,
I could not run or sing,
in my tiny world so warm.
Yet there You sculpted me--
You ran and guarded,
You sang and kissed my soul into Being,
placed Your blessing on me!

And when I was born
You did not let go,
let go of these little hands...
Now when I stumble, You run with me,
whenever I sing, You harmonize me,
You create me in the womb of this world!

...but suddenly this room will give way.

Throw down these walls, make darkness quake and tremble,
Let it run and hide.
For then all blindness will lift,
My soul will slip,
Slip into Your arms,
And I'll breathe my first Breath,
Finally born alive...

 My Father, with You."

Section IV. Purity// Maturity

{ Becoming }

January 31, 2010

"Open my eyes-
Born again.
This wondering flesh,
I am encased in.

Roving
Crying
Breaking apart-
Who designed
such a tender heart?
Blissful
Resolving
Childish be.

Lord, bless the woman
deep inside...
Dying to begin
Yet struggling alive.

Kiss quietly away the wildness
Take my groping hand,
And underneath these childish dreams
A beautiful woman will stand."

Section V. Imagination

{ Silver }

(Inspired by what I think was a "vision" I saw once)

September 12, 2011

"I hear silver call my name,
Silvery voice in my rainbow veins;

It says, 'Come away, child, come away!
Run through towering, echoing trees,
The shimmering Dryad company, dancing!
We will clothe you with tissue wings,
Gather you into sunlight, dappled, streaming.'

And yet the world pulls me away
Away from the forest, glimmering;
Yet evermore the silver calls to me,
My Being, once quiet, now all aquivering
From silver racing through my rainbow veins."
